Somewhere between a Peruvian ceviche bar and a Tokyo izakaya sits First Mates, Last Laugh, planted on Westhaven Marina with a sunny, dog-friendly courtyard that makes the harbourside setting feel like the point. The South American-Japanese menu runs from tuna and salmon taquitos and fresh sashimi through to mussel escabeche with toasted focaccia, before mains bring grilled snapper with scampi bisque and Lake Ohau wagyu picanha alongside elevated fish and chips. Espresso martinis and spiced clamato red snappers keep the drinks list playful. Casual on the surface, more thoughtful underneath.
