Rotorua is a popular weekend getaway destination in the North Island, a town set on its namesake lake. Its allure comes from its thrilling geothermal activity and its thriving Māori culture. Its allure lies in its geothermal wonders, lush forests and strong connection to Māori culture. Visitors can expect steaming geysers, bubbling mud pools, and a welcoming community that celebrates New Zealand’s cultural heritage. Of course, a trip to Rotorua would not be complete without hitting up its vibrant restaurant and eatery scene.

We have gathered some of the best restaurants in Rotorua to help you pick somewhere to dine during your weekend getaway.

What to See in Rotorua

Your Rotorua escape would not be complete until you’ve explored its natural geothermal landscapes. Head to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland to see vibrant silica terraces, striking crater lakes and the famous Champagne Pool. Another must-visit is Te Puia, home to the spectacular Pōhutu Geyser, which erupts up to 20 times a day.

For a peaceful stroll, wander around Kuirau Park, a free public space filled with steaming lakes and footbaths. If you’re after stunning lake views (and there is plenty), make your way to the Rotorua Lakefront or take a short drive to Blue Lake (Lake Tikitapu) and Green Lake (Lake Rotokākahi) to bask in nature.

What to Do in Rotorua

Beyond sightseeing, Rotorua offers plenty of adventure. Thrill-seekers will love mountain biking through the Whakarewarewa Forest, home to world-class trails among towering redwoods. For something more relaxed, take a canopy tour through native forests or unwind in the Polynesian Spa’s geothermal pools overlooking Lake Rotorua.

Families and fun-lovers can enjoy a ride on the Skyline Rotorua gondola and luge or get an adrenaline rush white-water rafting on the Kaituna River, famous for its 7-metre Tutea Falls. If you prefer something unique and fun, try zorbing – rolling downhill in a giant inflatable ball, a Rotorua invention that’s both quirky and unforgettable.

Flavours of Plenty Festival

The Flavours of Plenty Festival is here! From 16th April to 3rd May, be sure to join in on the celebration of Rotorua and the wider Bay of Plenty’s best flavours, where every dish tells a story. This not-for-profit initiative aims to bring the food community of the Bay of Plenty together and to showcase the best of its culinary delights.
