Nowhere is that more evident than in Tāmaki Makaurau, where the city is shaped by a melting pot of cultures, represented in kitchens in neighbourhood locals through to bustling inner-city eateries, and waterfront institutions.
What better way to take a culinary tour of what Auckland has to offer than by booking yourself a table during Auckland Restaurant Month. How We Eat: Teppanyaki & Sake: Sizzle and Show
148 Quay Street, Auckland CentralThursday, August 19, 6:30pm. $90 pp.
If you’re going to Teppanyaki, why not do it at the oldest Teppanyaki restaurant in the city centre? Kicking off the final week of Auckland Restaurant Month is this lively Japanese dining experience that is not to be missed. The evening begins with a traditional Kagami Birakiritual, where a sake barrel is ceremonially opened to symbolize good fortune and new beginnings. The evening then flows into a lively show in an intimate setting of just 50 seats, where chefs combine theatrical flair and culinary charm. Think knives, flames and of course, lots of sake. This event is part of the How We Eat dining series, celebrating culture, ritual and the stories behind food.

For a taste of kingi Classics

An absolute favourite amongst Auckland's foodie scene, and international visitors alike, looking to get a taste of classic Kiwi fare. kingi invites those wanting to take a culinary journey back six years to revisit favourites from their menu in this not to be missed event. The menu will feature hero dishes from current and past menus reimagined with seasonal produce. You can expect a snack on arrival followed by a delectable three-course meal and beverages to accompany. This event is set to be sold out, so don’t miss your opportunity to take a seat at one of the most exciting chef’s tables this month.

An Eighties Whisky Road Trip

Take a trip down memory lane, to 1980s Pokeno, New Zealand for one night only at Vivace. This R18 event is for those who appreciate a good drop of locally distilled whisky with a side of nostalgia and great food. Hosted by The Whisky Baron himself, Nigel Kelly, this classic Kiwi experience is not to be missed: bonus points for the longest mullet.

How We Eat: Indian Memories To Plate - Sid’s Table
12 Wyndham St, Auckland CentralIt's perfect for A first-year Michelin Bib Gourmand worth chasing down.You need to try Chef Sid Chopra's take on a dish from a lesser-known Indian region.Look out for The character of the heritage building it's housed in.Thursday, August 20, 6:30pm. $120 pp.
As part of the ‘How We Eat’ dining series that celebrates culture, ritual and the stories behind food, this dinner event pays homage to Indian cuisine and culture led by Chef Sid Chopra. Expect an intimate night filled with rich flavors in a communal, family-style setting reflecting warmth, connection and hospitality, as Chef Sid guides you through a personal journey of his culinary roots. Expect comforting dishes from his Grandmother’s table to reimagined creations learnt from his decades of travel and international influence, shared amongst friends for an unforgettable evening.

Tacoteca Little Chefs Masterclass

Who said Auckland Restaurant Month was reserved for adults? Got a little one who loves to cook? Bring them along to this previously sold-out masterclass just for kids. Fusing traditional Mexican dishes and a whole lot of fun, the kids will love taking the lead in their very own kitchen setting, because every future Head Chef had to start somewhere, right? Even better when you can watch the kids create with a marg in hand. Sounds like the perfect Sunday afternoon to us.

Esther Restaurant
4 Viaduct Harbour Avenue, Auckland Central3 courses $65 pp. Menu is designed for sharing. Available for lunch or dinner.
Start with the pitta with taramasalata, baked saganaki, spanakopita & coastal lamb souvlaki. Enjoy moussaka with village salad for the main, and for dessert, the kataifi nest with rose water ice cream & pistachio.

Bistro Saine
51 Albert Street, Auckland Central3 courses $65 pp. Available for lunch or dinner.
Start with your choice of chicken liver parfait or steak tartare or pomme dauphine. Followed by market fish or coq au vin or ratatouille. Finish with chocolate whisky mousse or Île flottante with lemon curd & praline.

Featuring a smoked kahawai crème and wakame frybread, followed by a selection of shared plates including venison tataki tostada, tofu mayo caesar and creamed corn madeleine. With braised lamb neck rigatoni with brussels sprouts slaw for the mains and finishing with a playful take on lolly cake. Add a kaimoana platter of oysters, sashimi & salmon cones for an additional $25pp.
